What Is A Virtual Medical Scribe?
A remote medical scribe virtually accompanies the provider in the exam room and records detailed information into the electronic medical record (EMR) via a personal laptop or computer and a high-speed, reliable internet connection.

As a virtual medical scribe, you are a critical support role to assist providers to deliver care to their patients, and in the comfort of your own home! A remote medical scribe virtually accompanies the provider in the exam room and records detailed information into the electronic medical record (EMR) via a laptop or computer. You can expect 1:1 provider interaction for the duration of the shift. This role is the perfect opportunity for you to gain clinical experience while working safely from home.
Healthcare-Focused
- Pre-health, pre-med, pre-pa, pre-nursing or healthcare-focused student or post-baccalaureate
- Passion for healthcare
- 18+ years old with a high school diploma or equivalent and authorized to work in the US
- Willing to submit a background check and drug screen required upon hire
- College-level knowledge of medical terminology, human anatomy, and physiology preferred (this will come in handy during training!)
Flexible Availability
- Part-time virtual scribes are required to complete two shifts per week for a minimum of 6 consecutive months.
- Shifts range from 8 to 12 hours.
- Full-time positions may be available; however, this is not a seasonal position.
Important to Note
- We build your schedule around YOUR availability to work on a semester basis and encourage “stacking classes” on opposing weekdays.
- For example, current students register for classes on Mon/Wed/Fri to allow Tue/Thur to work or vice versa.

- Computer screen(s) must not be intentionally or unintentionally visible by anyone other than the scribe.
- Access to high-speed internet and all wireless networks in the home must be WPA2 password secured.

How long are the shifts for virtual scribes?
- Clinic
- Shift duration is typically 8-9 hours
- Candidates must have full availability for the entire 7a-7p window of time due to the potential time zone differences they may share with their assigned facility/provider.
- Emergency Department
- Shift duration is typically 10-12 hours
Are virtual scribes required to be vaccinated for COVID-19?
- Not all sites require a vaccine record or the COVID vaccine. This information will be discussed with your recruiter.
How are virtual scribes trained?
- Virtual scribes are trained the same as in-person scribes with the exception of the clinical training which is done virtually. There may be a downtime of 1-2 weeks after the completion of classroom training in which the new hire will have their log-in credentials and EMR system set up prior to their first clinical training session. As with some in-person specialty sites, virtual specialty sites may also have their own specialty training. You will discuss these details with your recruiter.
- The start date for their clinical training depends on the facility. There will generally be a 1-2 week downtime between completion of their final exam and their first day of clinical training.
Are virtual scribes required to travel?
- No, this role is performed 100% remotely from training to independent scribing. If you are interested in traveling after scribing for 3-6 months, there are in-person Implementation Trainer opportunities available.
Do I have to live in a specific state or region to be considered for a virtual role?
- Yes, you must permanently reside in the following states to be considered for a virtual medical scribe role: AL, GA, IA, ID, IN, KY, LA, MS, NC, ND, NH, OK, PA, SC, TN, TX, UT, WI, and WY. - You will need
- A personally-owned laptop or full-desktop computer with a keyboard, mouse, and monitor with a working microphone and webcam *purchased within the last 4 years.
- Private, dedicated workspace at home that can be secured by closing a door and free of excessive background noise and interruptions
- Computer screen(s) that is not visible, intentionally or unintentionally, by anyone other than you
- Access to high-speed internet and all wireless networks in the home must be WPA2 password secured
- Minimum 40 Mb/s downloads and 8 Mb/s uploads for internet speed that you can test here
- Minimum 8 GB of RAM
